GR2W02 - Simple groups, representations and applications

We discuss how representation theory can be used to determine the possible structure of monodromy groups of hypergeometric sheaves over G_m in  characteristic p, as well as to explicitly construct local systems that realize various families of (close to be) simple groups. This is joint work with Nick Katz.
