If you have a question about this talk, please contact Macarena Arenas.

I will begin by explaining the results by Kreck expressing the mapping class groups of some high dimensional manifolds as group extensions of certain known groups, and then I will sketch the proof of this theorem. I will use this as a way of introducing certain results and techniques from high dimensional topology. Finally, I will explain some more recent results by Krannich regarding the splitting (or non splitting) of some of the Kreck extensions in certain dimensions.
