DESCRIPTION:I will  begin by explaining the results by Kreck e
 xpressing the mapping class groups of some high di
 mensional manifolds as group extensions of certain
  known groups\, and then I will sketch the proof o
 f this theorem.  I will use this as a way of intro
 ducing certain results and techniques from high di
 mensional topology. \nFinally\,  I will explain so
 me more recent results by Krannich regarding the s
 plitting (or non splitting) of some of the Kreck e
 xtensions in certain dimensions. \n
