Ian Firth has spent a career designing bridges of all sorts, large and small, and is passionate about the need to make them contextual and beautiful as well as functional and economic. His 2018 TED talk drew attention to the fact that bridges are for the people and communities who use them, and that engineers must use their skills to meet that need in an appropriate and long lasting way, while also tackling the complexities of economic construction and maintenance. This talk will draw on his experience with examples of some of the many projects he has been involved with around the world.
This talk is part of the Engineering Department Structures Research Seminars series.
