To any complex algebraic variety one can associate a complex analytic variety. This analytification preserves an incredible amount of information about the original variety. Over normed fields it is not clear how to produce a good theory of analytification, the naive definitions often product totally disconnected spaces. I will talk about one construction, due to V. Berkovich, which preserves all the information one could wish for.
