If you have a question about this talk, please contact Dr Geoffroy Lesur. Analytical works as well as high-resolution simulations are used today to study the evolution of disc galaxies. The open questions of the origins and evolutions of so-called flocculent and grand-design spiral galaxies are yet still not completely answered. By using current computational resources, we have studied which relevant mechanisms for the discs are numerically realizable today. Thereby, we have mainly focused on the production and evolution of classical density waves. In my talk, I will show a few examples that highlight the difficulty of producing classical density waves with current simulations. In addition, I will discuss the consequences of our result in respect of earlier interpretations of numerical results. This talk is part of the DAMTP Astro Lunch series.
