Abstract: In recent years, the European Commission has published multiple legislative proposal that have an impact on AI systems and Data Science, for example the AI Act and the AI Liability Directive. These pieces of legislation prescribe a number of different obligations on AI providers, distributors, and users, such as many new requirements on data management of high-risk systems (e.g., medical devices), that need to be coordinated with the legal provisions already in force, such as GDPR . At the same time, the field of AI auditing has been gaining popularity among researchers and companies, who have been joining efforts to apply ethical principles to the whole AI development lifecycle, including the data collection phase, in order to comply with ethical and legal principles. The topic is particularly important in the context of healthcare since AI systems in this field process a significant amount of personal data and AI developers need to apply a complex framework of principles, especially in view of the upcoming laws. This lecture will illustrate the legal and ethical issues of employing health data for AI training and it will show an example of how to apply ethical and legal principles in practice. This talk is part of the EU funded MSCA project “DataCom”.
