If you have a question about this talk, please contact Macarena Arenas. An exotic n-sphere is a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to S^n. In this talk I will explain the first construction of such Manifolds due to Milnor in 1956. To do so, I will introduce the notion of cobordism and Pontryagin classes, and state some important results in topology such as the Hirzebruch signature theorem. Finally, if time permits I will say what is known about exotic spheres in other dimensions. This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series. This talk is included in these lists:
