NC2W01 - Making the bridge: Exploring new connections between number theory and physics This series of three lectures will provide a brief introduction to the theory of automorphic forms and representations aimed at non-specialists. We will discuss automorphic forms, explain the transition from automorphic forms to automorphic representations and what is gained by doing so, and give an outline of some of the main questions in the field. The first lecture focusses on the definition of automorphic form, adelization, the passage from automorphic form to automorphic representation, and the passage from global to local.
