Recently it was observed that in a heterogeneous multi-agent system with diffusive coupling practical synchronization can be achieved by choosing the coupling strength sufficiently large. However, the magnitude of the necessary coupling strength depends on the network structure and the dynamics of the agents; furthermore, all agents must use the same coupling strength. In particular, this approach is not fully decentralized. In this talk it will be shown how the ideas of ``funnel control’’ from the adaptive control community can be utilized to overcome these drawbacks. After recalling the basic ideas of funnel control, the two approaches node-wise and edgewise funnel coupling will be introduced. Furthermore, an application of edgewise funnel-coupling to the problem of decentralized optimization is presented.
