We have obtained the eye transcriptome for the hagfish, Eptatretus cirrhatus, as well as for several southern hemisphere lamprey species, by high-throughput sequencing and de novo assembly. Analysis of the phylogenetic trees for a number of components of interest provides clues to the evolution of phototransduction, photoreceptors, and the retinoid cycle in vertebrates.
