Mathematics and Applications of Branes in String and M-theory
Motivated by considering M2-branes ending on M5-branes, we consider the ABJM theory with a boundary. The addition of a boundary to a Chern-Simons theory is non-trivial, in particular the bulk action is only gauge invariant up to a total derivative. For pure Chern-Simons theories it is possible to impose boundary conditions which leads to the well-known relation to WZW models. However for Chern-Simons plus matter theories, the situation is more complicated. Instead, we show how to add boundary degrees of freedom to restore the gauge symmetry, and this turns out to also lead to a type of WZW model on the boundary.
