MHMW02 - Modern History of Mathematics: Looking Ahead

In 2020 the government of India released its National Education Policy. Throughout the document was a new notable emphasis on the so-called `Indian Knowledge Systems’ (IKS), a call to draw from the rich history of Indian contributions to various fields as well as local resources for learning to enrich various aspects of the curriculum. The mathematical sciences and allied disciplines were no exception. In this domain, early adopters set to indigenise their curricula by including historical discoveries and sources from the substantial mathematical heritage of the Indian subcontinent which flourished for over two and a half millennia. We explore the ways in which such mathematical pedagogy is embracing historical sources in efforts to modernise the curriculum, the new vigour it is creating for the discipline of History of Mathematics, and the ways in which it relates to greater global movements to study and promote to `Indigenous Knowledge Systems’.
