We present the birational classification of complex algebraic varieties, namely their division into fibrations of canonically polarized, Calabi-Yau, and Fano varieties. We then give a brief introduction to moduli theory and describe some applications to elliptic fibrations and moduli spaces of curves. If time permits, we will apply this theory to derive the Enriques-Kodaira classification of algebraic surfaces.
