If you have a question about this talk, please contact nobody. MMVW01 - Summer School on Mathematics of Movement Ecological series can often be explained by a series of distinct but unobserved behavioural modes: a female elephant may slow down when she gives birth and remain so whilst her calf is young; a bird may change direction rapidly and unpredictably when under attack. Hidden Markov models (HMMs) can be used to detect these behavioural modes from observational data and to cluster data points into behavioural modes. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to HMMs and how they can be fitted to data using either a frequentist or Bayesian approach. Using examples from my own work in elephant ecology, I will illustrate how these models can be used to make sense of movement data.
