Many bacterial pathogens live in both people and the environment around us, and so it is often unclear where people have “caught” their infection from. Genomics has revolutionised our ability to track the movements and evolution of bacterial pathogens. I will describe how I have used genomics to transform our understanding of a little-known but important bacterium called Mycobacterium abscessus which causes life-threatening lung infections.
