This is a survey talk on configuration spaces. After defining them and situating them in the mathematical landscape, I will introduce a common method to study their homology, the so-called scanning. Focusing on ordered configurations of discs, I will discuss how their homology is related to planetary systems and, time permitting, the little discs and the Lie operad.

This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series.
