The existence of an algorithm to decide whether finite 2-dimensional simplicial complexes are contractible is a notorious open problem. Equivalently, can one decide whether a balanced presentation presents the trivial group? I will discuss this problem, my solution to an analogue for infinite complexes, and a connection with the Collatz conjecture.
