After the historic first detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations in 2015, the last few years have seen a sequence of detections announced, including the first gravitational wave-multi-messenger observation of merging neutron stars. 2019 should see the start of the third observing run of the LIGO gravitational wave detectors – expected to be the longest duration observing run to date. Professor Rowan, University of Glasgow, will discuss the status of observations, plans for the global network of advanced gravitational wave detectors and what the future of the field might look like.
