Bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic devices based on P3HT /PCBM active layers have achieved, up until very recently, the highest power conversion efficiencies. In this talk, the molecular and morphological details that contribute to the relatively high performance of this blend will be discussed. Design principles for the improvement on P3HT as a p-type component will be outlined, and polymer materials that employ these design criteria will be described. Finally, a short state of the art review of the current status in device efficiencies will be given.
