This talk intends to honour the memory and work of Giulio
Regeni, the Cambridge Ph.D. student murdered in Egypt. It will focus
on my own fieldwork impressions during the revolutionary period in the
Middle East and North Africa region. I will briefly recount my
experience and make the case for the need to promote, rather than
supress, academic research in potentially hostile political
environments.
