I will discuss the entanglement entropy of disjoint intervals in 2d CFTs with a large central charge. These are CFTs that could plausibly have a holographic dual. Without assuming holography, the conformal block expansion at large central charge naturally leads to emergent 3d geometries. The final answer for the entanglement entropy is universal—independent of most microscopic details of the CFT —and agrees with the prediction from the Ryu-Takayanagi formula in AdS/CFT.
