Mild introduction to Geometric Measure Theory

The talk is intended as an introduction to geometric measure theory and minimal surfaces and should be accessible to 1st year CCA PhD students. No prior knowledge of GMT will be required to follow the talk. Familiarity with basic measure theory and differential geometry will be helpful.

The GMT part of the talk will cover
  • n-rectifiable sets,
  • rectifiable n-varifolds,
  • currents and
  • general varifolds.
On the minimal surfaces part the highlights are:
  • first variation,
  • monotonicity formula and
  • connection with elliptic PDEs.
