If you have a question about this talk, please contact nobody. NPCW06 - Non-positive curvature and applications I will discuss recent work, joint with Mark Kambites, Nóra Szakács, and Richard Webb (Manchester), on determining the exact exponential growth rate of free inverse semigroups, algebraic objects arising from considering finite connected subgraphs of the Cayley graph of the free group. These growth rates turn out to be algebraic numbers with rather mysterious defining polynomials. I will also briefly discuss growth rates of closely related algebraic objects, called free regular *-semigroups, and show that the growth rate for the monogenic such object is intermediate.
