Kaplansky’s zero divisor conjecture predicts that the group algebra of a torsion-free group with coefficients in an arbitrary field has no zero devisors. In this talk, we will survey the status of the conjecture, and discuss a proof that group algebras of fundamental groups of 3-manifolds embed into division rings. This is joint with Pablo Sánchez-Peralta.
