The Plateau’s problem was raised in 1760: Given a closed curve as a boundary, does there exist a surface with smallest area among the set of surfaces whose boundary is the given curve? It originates from certain physical phenomenon such as soap films. In this talk we will briefly introduce the solution to this problem, as well as its generalizations in the case of higher dimension and codimension, where regularities may fail, i.e. the solution is no longer a smooth submanifold.
