MHMW01 - Modern history of mathematics: emerging themes

Whiteside’s edition of The Mathematical Papers of Isaac Newton (1967–81) ranks among the most significant contributions to the history of mathematics in the last century. This presentation will begin by highlighting the significance of Whiteside’s accomplishment. Whiteside was able to reconstruct Newton’s mathematical archive, which is fragmented and difficult to date. Subsequently, I will examine some shortcomings in Whiteside’s edition. The awareness of these shortcomings is a consequence of the substantial shifts in perspective that have taken place within the field of the history of mathematics. It is hoped that in the future, further research will be conducted in order to address the aforementioned open issues.
