If you have a question about this talk, please contact Macarena Arenas. Abelianisation of (non-sporadic) mapping clas groups is known to be finite. The Ivanov conjecture, open for more than 25 years, asks whether the same holds for finite-index subgroups of MCGs. I will review my recent work with Vlad Marković towards this question. I will mention a reformulation due to Putman-Wieland, Magnus embedding, and spectra of Riemann surfaces. This talk is part of the Geometric Group Theory (GGT) Seminar series.
