My talk begins with deformability of red blood cells under with and without nucleus. By utilizing an online high speed vision and a high speed actuator, we could succeed in fast and fine cell manipulation with the frequency of 100Hz and the resolution of 250 nanometers. As an application of cell manipulation, we show “Cell Stress Test” where a mechanical stress is continuously imparted to a cell until it eventually gets damages. We also show an interesting behavior of red blood cells where their recovery characteristics after three-minutes-loading in microchannel dramatically change. We discovered two-steps-recovery-process where 50% recover happens in the first step, and the remaining 45% in the second step. We also show “Cell Pinball” where this phenomenon can only be observed under red blood cell on limited condition. We tried to explain the principle why cell pinball behavior happens. We also discuss how human can keep their life in space center under zero gravity. We show our hypothesis where our brain activity correlates with the deformability of red blood cell. Finally, we show a new “Cell Exercise” where a cell under periodic pressure results in twice more contact areas between cell and bottom than those under atmospheric pressure during one hour.

The seminar will be held in JDB Seminar Room, Department of Engineering, and online (zoom): https://newnham.zoom.us/j/92544958528?pwd=YS9PcGRnbXBOcStBdStNb3E0SHN1UT09
