The deficiency of a finite presentation of a group is the number of generators minus the number of relators. In this talk I shall explain that a certain class of free-by-cyclic groups resolves the old question of whether one can simultaneously minimise the rank (number of generators) and maximise the deficiency.

This talk is part of the Geometric Group Theory (GGT) Seminar series.
