PMV - GeomPack: Geometry and packing in material structure and biology Infrastructures of the Interspatial Interlacer and other tales… Session outline- Mark Eaglen is a multi disciplinary artist exploring relationships of Art, Science, Technology and Nature. The session will provide an overview of his artistic practice with an emphasis upon recent works in development as part of ‘Infrastructures of the Interspatial Interlacer’. This will feature examples that call upon responsive Voronoi generation, real time processing and sculptural investigations of the Scutoid form. The most recent work- ‘Quantum Foam and the Scutoid variations’ explores the spaces in between; ideas of cause and effect across shifting states of scale and time. The piece is grounded in research across quantum theory, newly discovered biological structures and dynamic systems found in nature. Despite these scientific underpinnings, the work seeks to engage poetries of association that place your own reflections and connections at the heart of the experience. The session will conclude with a sharing of this new interactive work, presented as an instrument through which participants can ‘play’ relationships of point, line and space. Exploring evolving structures, forms and scales; the work invites you to navigate the delicate balance found between such shifting states and the complexities that arise over time. Artists statement- An active engagement with experimentation informs evolving works that often employ traditional processes alongside developments in technology and scientific discovery. This responsive approach has led enquiries into data manipulation, responsive forms, holography, interactive works and the playful exploration of concepts through open narratives. Previous developments have explored the nature of video feedback in regard to the process, aesthetics and concepts raised. This has highlighted visual and behavioural associations found between the natural world and technological systems, alongside the reciprocal roles of the transmitter and receiver. Scientific discovery and speculation often inspire exploratory pathways, but rather than illustrate such sources; the works seek to encourage wider connections and contexts of association. Recent investigations have been exploring ideas of interdependencies, inspired by behaviours, structures and dynamic systems found across scales in the natural world and the infrastructures that we form within it. Informed by discoveries in previous works, the ongoing development is iterative in its approach; continuing to engage with the wider aesthetic and conceptual associations raised through responsive sculptural experimentation, interactive systems of autonomy and challenging modes of perception. Works have been exhibited nationally and internationally with key developments kindly supported and enabled by the Arts Council of Wales through residencies, solo and group exhibitions. This has resulted in works longlisted and shown in the International Emerging Artist Award in Dubai, the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the Lumen Art Prize, Ars Electronica and the Aesthetica Art Prize, with work published within the Future Now 100 artists anthology selected from over 3500 entries. He is cofounder of studioMADE with Angela Davies, a cross disciplinary studio and gallery space seeking to inspire connectivity within a complex world. Alongside his artistic practice, he has maintained an active role within Arts education for over twenty years, lecturing on a range of undergraduate courses in the Arts. Video feedback- The act of a video camera’s live output being fed back into the video camera as a live input.
