The theory of profinite groups acting on profinite graphs is a very recent development in profinite rigidity, modelled on the successes of classical Bass-Serre theory in geometric group theory. This talk will be an introduction to the notions of profinite graphs and trees, profinite group actions on profinite trees, and profinite graphs of groups. We will explore the profinite structure theorem for profinite groups acting on profinite trees with finite quotients and understand why a more general analogue does not exist. As an application, we will use this theory prove the profinite Kurosh subgroup theorem.

This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series.
