This talk will be an exploration of the world of surfaces and their homeomorphisms. We will use train tracks on surfaces to set off on a journey that will include a safari in the land of simple closed curves and take us to the region of measured geodesic laminations, at the frontier of Teichm├╝ller space. At the end of our voyage, we will gaze at the view from the peak of Nielsen-Thurston classification. No previous experience in topological rail travel is required.

This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series.
