DDE - The mathematical and statistical foundation of future data-driven engineering

In this seminar, I will give a tutorial introduction to challenges in power-electronics-dominated power systems with a particular focus on stability and control. I will discuss both the device level and the system level. On the device level, we will focus on grid-forming converter technologies, review and compare the four predominant approaches, and close with a general approach that encompasses all previous ones. On the system level, we first review different stability metrics, then focus on the provision of ancillary services by means of inverter-based sources, and discuss their implementation through dynamic virtual power plants. Throughout the talk, I will highlight the (often unexpected) lessons that we learnt in this research domain and point towards open and urgent problems.

This talk is part of the Isaac Newton Institute Seminar Series series.
