If you have a question about this talk, please contact nobody. MWSW05 - Winter School The principal aims of my three lectures are (i) to outline a few basic concepts in multiple scattering theory and (ii) to offer an introduction to asymptotic homogenization. We shall proceed by examining a few extremely simple ‘toy’ models, which are mostly one-dimensional to reduce the technical detail, ease exposition and even produce closed-form results. These explicit results will allow us to verify that the homogenized expressions for the effective material properties agree with those found from the full solution in the long-wavelength limit. Perhaps surprisingly, many phenomena found in more realistic (and complex) multiple scattering models can be observed in these simple examples; as time allows I shall discuss these, along with important features missing from my models.
