GR2W01 - Counting conjectures and beyond In modular representation theory in characteristic p, finite groups with a normal p-complement behave like p-groups. Broué-Puig introduced nilpotent blocks, which behave like p-group algebras. Malle-Navarro conjectured that nilpotent blocks are detectable from the ordinary character table. I present a new conjectural characterization of nilpotent blocks from the character table by using block splittings and lower defect groups.
