In this talk I will explain the role of certain special functions, such as the error and complementary error function, in problems of asymptotic and uniform asymptotic expansions derived from integrals of Laplace type. A possible generalisation of the error function will be presented, motivated by a singular perturbation problem, and several analytical and computational properties of this new function will be discussed.

Joint work with Nico M. Temme (CWI, Amsterdam).
