GCSW02 - Structure preservation and general relativity Motivated by more fundamental theories of gravity such as string theory, in recent years there has been a growing interesting in solving the Einstein equations numerically beyond the traditional astrophysical set up. For instance in spacetime dimensions higher than the four that we have observed, or in exotic spaces such as anti-de Sitter spaces. In this talk I will give an overview of the challenges that are often encountered when solving the Einstein equations in these new settings. In the second part of the talk I will provide some examples, such as the dynamics of unstable black holes in higher dimensions and gravitational collapse in anti-de Sitter spaces.
