DNMW03 - Optimal design of soft matter - including a celebration of Women in Materials Science (WMS) Owing to the small length scales involved, aqueous interfaces dominate the properties of colloidal materials suspended in water. Surface charges, in particular, control the stability of colloidal suspensions and the self-assembly and organization of nanoparticles. Apart from charging by surface groups, ions and protons adsorb at the surfaces of colloids, lipid membranes and biological molecules, affecting their electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions.
