DNMW03 - Optimal design of soft matter - including a celebration of Women in Materials Science (WMS) Ball-and-Spring lattices that have a perfect balance between the number of degrees of freedom and the number of constraining springs under periodic boundary conditions have topologically protected zero-energy surface modes and nonlinear elastic Guest-Hutchinson modes. This talk will provide an overview of these modes in various model systems, including one whose excitation spectrum matches that of a quantum model on a honeycomb lattice introduced by Kitaev. It will also discuss bulk and surface excitation in systems in which the number constraining springs exceeds the number of degrees of freedom.
