MES - The mathematics of energy systems The management of energy systems, particularly when transitioning to sustainable sources of electricity, requires a successful blending of interdisciplinary work. We discuss how the frontier between pure and applied maths becomes somewhat artificial when dealing with price signals in energy optimisation. The presentation is organised as a story with three main characters, Isaac Newton, Joseph-Louis Lagrange, and Jean-Jacques Moreau.
