If you have a question about this talk, please contact Dr. Carl Turner. In the Regge limit string-string interactions and string-brane interactions can be neatly described by a simple operator, the eikonal operator. After reviewing the derivation of this result, I will discuss how we can use it to learn something about curved spacetimes in string theory and the form of the interactions between the massive, higher-spin states of the string spectrum. More precisely, I will show how the dynamics of a string in the curved spacetime of an extremal p-brane is encoded in the eikonal operator for string-brane scattering in flat spacetime. I will also describe in some detail the inelastic transitions caused by the action of the tidal forces on the string. This talk is part of the Quantum Fields and Strings Seminars series.
