A family of expanders is a sequence of finite graphs that are uniformly sparse and yet highly connected. In this talk I will show
how to construct expanders by approximating actions on manifolds that are `mixing enough’. Time permitting, I will also
illustrate some peculiar aspects of the geometry of the expanders thus obtained.
