Landauer-Buttiker scattering formalism provides a well-established
framework for the description of stationary electron transport in small
coherent structures. Recent generalizations allow calculation of the
current in the presence of a periodic external perturbation such as a
surface-acoustic-wave-induced potential. We shall discuss in details the
key concepts and assumptions underlying the formalism, and demonstrate
the simplicity of the actual calculation. Applicability of the theory to
real-world devices is gauged by comparing to recent measurements of
double quantum dot and carbon nanotube devices at NPL and Cambridge.
