The 39-m E-ELT is an approved ESO programme. The telescope will be constructed on cerro Armazones, close to Paranal, in northern Chile. The science programme driving the telescope design and instruments will be presented as will the design process, prototyping and current status. The presentation will also address the plans for the instrumentation programme.
