After 50 years of research and development, the modern industrial laser takes on many forms. With high efficiencies, power levels in the TW range, and pulse widths below the magical electron-phonon timescales of materials, the current capabilities of modern lasers are quite breathtaking. This talk will discuss the research currently being pursued within the Centre for Industrial Photonics, and present a range of novel industrial applications that are set to transform the global manufacturing landscape.

Bill is a Reader in Laser Engineering within the Cambridge University Engineering Department and Director of the Centre of Industrial Photonics. His research is on the subjects of laser-matter interactions, optical engineering, laser based manufacturing technologies, and micro/nano fabrication techniques. He is a member of the international advisory panel of the National Laser Centre of South Africa, a Fellow & Director of the Laser Institute of America, a Fellow of the IoP, is CEO of Laser Fusion Technologies Ltd and advises industry and governments on a wide range of laser based manufacturing technologies.

This talk is part of the IET Cambridge Network - Lectures series.
