In this paper I provide a conceptual framework that allows to intuitively define two doctrines – non-reductive physicalism and non-reductive materialism – that are consistent with the intuitions of emergentists. In particular, it allows to understand the two basic emergentist strategies to develop a middle ground between reductive physicalism and substance dualism.
