Faced with global challenges, such as climate change, strategies to mitigate damage and foster more sustainable lifestyles are greatly needed. Improving on, for instance, clean technology is only one piece of the puzzle, key psychological and behavioural aspects need to be considered. Understanding why humans do or do not engage in sustainability is a crucial part of tackling the environmental crisis. My research investigates three aspects that influence the psychology of environmental decision making and sustainability: individual factors – such as emotions, social factors – such as the ways in which the behaviour of others shapes our own, and contextual factors – such as how the content and framing of information that we are exposed to influence us. My work on these aspects aims to offer both theoretically and practically relevant insights. It seeks to help us understand what shapes and motivates pro-environmental behaviour as well as uncover potential avenues for positive social and environmental change.
