Scientists and scientific literacy are key to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals to build digital and green economies. All countries are being advised to invest more in research and development which also brings technological, economic and educational development, however the gap between richer and poorer countries is widening. We discuss the various issues for developing countries, and grass root work that is being done though programme such as ‘Physics Without Frontiers’, to support scientists and students in the Global South.
