I will describe some of the development of the field of chemical physics in the area of correlated quantum materials, focusing on the emergence of ab initio quantum chemical methods for correlated quantum materials phenomena, and describe recent progress towards understanding high temperature superconductors at the atomic and chemical level using such methods.
